Raving Poets Magazine: Call for Submissions

“Born to Write” may be over, but your words can live on forever…

We invite the Raving Poets to submit their work for the inaugural edition of our magazine.

The Raving Poets magazine is published twice annually in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It’s an “e-publication”, existing online as well as in downloadable PDF format. It highlights and celebrates the artists that make the Raving Poets Canada’s premier purveyors of poetic awesomeness.

Editions of the magazine will be archived both on the site and by the National Library of Canada.

What we are looking for:

1. Poetry
To be eligible for publication, you must have read with the Raving Poets at least once during the latest series, Born to Write, which ran from October 15 to December 3, 2008.

Submission format
Submissions must include the following three items:

One poem only in Word, PDF, RTF, or plain text format. A poem submitted in the body of an email message is acceptable – in whatever format. Length is not an issue, but please try to keep it to a length that takes no more than 5 minutes to read.

The poem must be in “publishable” format – no post-submission rewrites will be honoured. However, the editors may request minor fixes for unintended errors, such as misspellings or grammatical oopses.

A 100-word biography in Word, PDF, RTF, or plain text format. (If you don’t send one, we reserve the right to make one up about you.) (And your Cheez-whiz fetish.)
A JPG photo of the author. (If you don’t send one, we reserve the right to take a picture of some random person’s foot say it’s yours.)
We accept submissions via email ONLY. Email submissions to gord@ravingpoets.com.

All poetry submitted by you, the Raving Poets, will be published.

2. Art/Photography
Any and all submissions of art or photography will be considered for inclusion in the magazine. In other words, a) you don’t have to be a poet who read during the latest series to submit visual art and b) the operative word here is “consider”. We want to present your poetry in the best possible way, so the act of submitting visual art does not guarantee its publication.

We’re looking for any and all photos taken at the Kasbar during readings as well as general visual art that reflects the tastes and sensibilities of our community of poets. Draw, paint, click, scribble, do a multimedia masterpiece and snap a picture of it. It’s all good. No image is too insignificant to be considered. Design elements such as curlicues, lines, font effects are all worth sending.

The editors reserve the right to reformat visual art to work with the layout and design of the magazine. That means a potentially limitless amount of messing with the piece may result. However, credit will be given for all works published.

Submission format
Please send your images in JPG, TIF, GIF or BMP. Images imbedded in DOC, PDF, or PUB files are also acceptable.

We accept submissions via email ONLY. Email submissions to gord@ravingpoets.com.

3. Title Search
We’re also looking for a title for our publication. “Raving Poets Magazine” just doesn’t cut it. Each edition will be subtitled with the name of the series (eg, “Born To Write”), but the main title is up for grabs.

Please send your title suggestions to gord@ravingpoets.com.

Deadline for poems, visual art and title suggestions: February 1st, 2009
