The Second Last Week!

Turning and turning, my clothes in the dryer
I’m pumped about my poem for the Kasbar;
Things will come together; the centre will explode;
Sheer anarchy will be loosed upon the world,
The blood-soaked tide will be blurted so far, they’ll hear
The unsuspecting audience downtown;
My best lines reek of conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Last Week is at hand.
The Second Last Week! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Wednesday
Troubles my sight: somewhere in a caramel dessert
A shape with a musician’s body and the head of a poet,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slippery thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of twee doity boids. (Hey, it’s my dweam)
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That after twenty centuries of stony sleep
Full of latex nightmares and rocking cradles,
What rough poetic beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards the microphone to be born?
