Lest We Forget

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day
in the eleventh month...we pause to remember
A scarce two minutes of silence to honour the dead
whose lives were sacrificed in war

The grey November sky mourns peace
as soldiers aim their guns at the clouds
and fire a salute to their fallen forefathers

The boom of their rifles is so loud
it triggers an outrage of car alarm sirens
     which mock the memorial ceremony
All through the long moment of shattered silence
ironic horns honk in rhythmic monotony
as the alarm systems go through their repertoire of noise
sirens wailing like an incoming aerial bombardment
bells and whistles whistling Dixie at the good old boys

This year sabres are rattling south of the border
The broken silence speaks louder than words
Lest we forget who freedom's real enemies are
the spirit of Truth (war's first casualty)
               demands to be heard
