I Had a Mohawk In the Summer of Love
(To be played punk rockabilly style with lyrics in parentheses sung by a gospel choir)

When I was a kid my dad used to cut my hair so short
It was like my weekly lesson in how to be a good sport
I'd never had a say in the matter so was I ever surprised
When I asked him for a Mohawk hair cut
               I couldn't believe my eyes

He proceeded to shave my head except for a narrow strip on top
Then he unplugged the razor and he brushed me off
I grinned from ear to ear in the mirror at what I saw
It was perfect for my grade two class's play about the Iroquois
               (about the pioneers...the Revolution
                    and the Conquest of America)

I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love
Long before that punk rock Johnny Rotten come lately
I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love
something in the air I was daydreaming of

I went running around the neighborhood
     in my homemade loin cloth
yelling like a warrior I waved my wooden tomahawk
I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love
something in the air I was barely aware of

I'd read about the Sand Creek Massacre
found out real young it wasn't like the movies were
The West wasn't won by the good guys like they said
It was won by racist cowboys who said "Better dead than red"

I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love
The news was always arguing between the hawks and doves
in the summer of flower power versus "Death from Above"
I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love

                         geetar...

Vietnam was on T.V. when I came running in for lunch
with my loin cloth riding up my little boy butt
I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love
something in the air I was barely aware of

but there was something in the music on the air that year
     transistor radios were everywhere
everywhere you went you'd hear the music of the youth
back when rock and roll still tried to care about the truth

I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love
something in the air I was daydreaming of
It was nineteen sixty seven and the world had lost it's innocence
while me and my best friend Julian were (bang bang)
          playing cowboys and Indians

I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love
The news was always arguing between the hawks and doves
(but there was) something in the music that I really dug
I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love

I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love
Nine years before that punk rock (upstart) Johnny Rotten come lately
I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love
I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love
I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love
I had a Mohawk in the Summer of Love!
