THE OTHER NIGHT
The other night you looked at me
You looked at me fleetingly but it meant something
Someone said of another:
'She looks at me like I'm a God and I love that'
It was such that I saw in your face in a moment
That other night
So I sat in your soft air
That air that wraps you like a quilt
Those strands of hair brushing your cheeks
Your dimples, your eyes, your voice
And I was enraptured by them all
That other night
When I gently peeled away the layers you offered
To expose the grape of your soft, moist heart
To touch your core - red, raw
You suffered me sweetly
Oh, so sweetly
That other night
You started to say something, but you stopped
And I let you walk away, I didn't chase you
I didn't want anything more
You had already given so much
That other night
But you left me with your smile, nonetheless
A candle's penny-burn on my memory
And in this growing shadow of your absence
More than all
It is this that I will keep
