I Wear the Red Poppy
I wear this symbol
Of those who have given me the biggest gift,
my freedom
For two grandfathers who took up arms
Who have suffered with nightmares
For their entire lives
To give my life peace and liberty
and choice
I can never repay this debt
Except to say thank you
To those who fought
At 11:00 on Nov 11th
I bow my head
Try to imagine
What these people have gone through
What they lost
For what we gained
So pay respects this November 11th
Even though you may not understand
What has been fought against
To give proud Canadians
The life they now lead
For those who paid the ultimate sacrifice
Many too young to have experienced
A whole life
Those who were just married
Who left behind those who loved them
Those who experienced death and torture
And horrific circumstances
Many who starved or had rationed food
Those wives who waited out the war
In bomb shelters
Scarred everyday they may not make it through
And that their husbands were injured or dead.
So bow your head
And say a little prayer or word of thanks
this November 11th.
Do not forget
You are here because of their sacrifices.
