In the Glowing

Sparks flying upward to the cloudy ceiling
Wood crackling dryly
Small voices getting louder and louder while ending their song
Hands reach out for one another in the glowing of the campfire
Dancing round and round like pagans
Skeeters trying to bite our uncovered skin
A small breeze makes me reach for my sleeping bag
Pulling it gently around my shoulders
I feel at home here
Where the sky predicts the events for the next day
Will our rubber boots get pulled out and put to the test or will sunscreen and bug spray be our cologne?

It’s sunny, I reach for my swimsuit and old tennis shoes
I take a dive into the cool murky water of the lake
I can’t see what monsters lurk there
Putting my feet down to feel the depth of the water
My shoes sink into the marshy bottom
Something grazes past my leg and I startle

I decide to head back to the pebbly beach
Letting the sun kiss my skin
Watching white clouds
Naming the animals which appear in a powder blue sky

The power of nature all around me showing its incredible force
The bees buzzing and flies racing past my face
I hear the birds singing happily
Wishing I could understand their song
The wind whistling through the reeds on the lake

I smile and fold my hands underneath my head

I am completely content here.
